One study compared the health of people born during the World War II sugar restriction with those born after a sharp increase in consumption of such foods occurred.
The results surprised scientists, the study was published in the journal Science, and strict rationing was introduced in Great Britain during and after World War II. When rationing ended in September 1953, average sugar consumption in Britain doubled.
Co-responsible researchers Tadeja Grakner, Claire Boone and Paul J. Gertler conducted the study. experiment with genetic and medical information of half a million people, while maintaining the confidentiality of their data. They analyzed the health of 60,183 people born between October 1951 and March 1956, people aged 51 to 60 years.
What discoveries were made during the experiment?
The researchers reported that those who rationed sugar early in life had a 35% lower risk of developing diabetes and a 20% lower risk of high blood pressure in middle age.
Likewise, the onset of these chronic diseases was delayed by four years in the case of diabetes and by two years in the case of high blood pressure.
They also found that protection against disease was greater in those who were conceived during sugar rationing and were infants. Those who were rationed before birth and then grew up with higher sugar intake had higher disease rates.
Experts say the findings add to evidence that diet early in life can influence later health.
“The results of a new study on sugar were surprising: the absolute amount of sugar consumed by the population doubled, from 41 to 80 grams per day, which amounts to just 155 extra calories. However, according to him, the researchers’ methodology is as follows. solid, and the result looks really interesting,” said Dr. Arie Stein.
According to studies that looked at people who consumed more sugar and those who consumed less or no sugar, excessive sugar consumption leads to poor health. However, there are many differences between the groups studied, leaving open the possibility that other factors may influence health.
Finally, early exposure to sugar creates a desire to consume it throughout life. People conceived and born during sugar rationing consume less sugar, according to the British government’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey.
