What awaits Apple before WWDC: a lot of artificial intelligence, but no ChatGPT emulator

All indications are that at WWDC Apple will present its plan to catch up in the universe of artificial intelligence (and not so much to revolutionize this technology with particularly revolutionary innovations).

At the next annual developer conference (WWDC), the first presentation of which will take place on June 10, Apple will finally lift the curtain on its artificial intelligence (AI) strategya technology in which the Apple company lags surprisingly (and alarmingly) behind its most direct competitors.

Everything indicates that at WWDC the people from Cupertino will present their plan to catch up in the universe of artificial intelligence (and not so much to revolutionize this technology with the help of particularly revolutionary innovations).. In accordance with BloombergApple plans to add AI magic to emoji, photo editing, messaging and email, among other things. These are not revolutionary announcements by any means, but the Cupertino-based company hopes the news will please its legion of followers around the world.

Apple also intends to make several changes to its software., which will be powered by artificial intelligence and will include voice message transcription, faster search, and adding conversational capabilities to Siri. All of these improvements are part of another strategy that Apple has dubbed internally as “Project Greymatter” and whose central axis is artificial intelligence built directly into the company’s devices that doesn’t rely on an Internet connection to be able to function properly. This AI will be able, for example, to create personalized emoji on the fly based on what the user is typing.

A slew of new AI features from Apple are coming soon to iOS 18 and MacOS 15. and updates introduced to Siri will also be reflected on Apple Watch, according to the statement Bloomberg.

There won’t be Apple’s own chatbot (yet) (and there will be an agreement with OpenAI)

However, despite all these new features, Apple apparently won’t be bringing a ChatGPT emulator to WWDC. The apple company does not yet have its own chatbot that can actually look at products that are already very advanced, such as ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Gemini (Google).

For this reason, and also in the absence of our own chatbot, Apple will fill this gap with an alliance with OpenAI. Mark Gurman assures Bloomberg that the agreement between Apple and the company led by Sam Altman has already been signed and, presumably, will be one of the highlights of the first speech at WWDC.

Alliance between Apple and OpenAIwhich will give it access to the most advanced artificial intelligence and could give the Apple company some competitive advantage over Samsung devices (which work with Gemini), However, this is not safe for the iPhone manufacturer.

After all, Sam Altman is becoming an increasingly controversial figure in the artificial intelligence arena. (This is evidenced, for example, by the recent controversy surrounding the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson). And not only this. OpenAI’s corporate structure is quite unstable. Its CEO was briefly fired last year, and his short-term departure led to an acute crisis that affected everyone at the company, as well as its main investment arm: Microsoft.

Apple doesn’t feel comfortable enough working with OpenAI as its sole AI provider, so it will have to negotiate a second deal with Google.which, yes, will not be ready for announcement at WWDC.

By signing agreements with third parties, Apple buys time to create its own chatbot (one that is truly on par with ChatGPT and company). In any case, Apple can probably afford to lag in this regard, since it has a competitive advantage that few competitors have: an absolutely massive user base that could ultimately make Apple the biggest “player” in the competitive arena. AI.
