Lufthansa increases ticket prices in Europe with environmental surcharge

The Lufthansa airline group announced on Tuesday it would increase prices on all its flights in Europe. cover part of the expenses related to the environmental requirements of the European Commission.

Company justified this growth that “it will not be able to bear the additional costs associated with regulatory requirements alone in the coming years.”

Lufthansa is citing mandatory quotas imposed by the EU on the use of cleaner fuels (SAFs) in aircraft tanks, with the aim of gradually replacing kerosene.

Share SAF should reach 2% by 20256% in 2030, then 20% from 2035 and finally 70% in 2050. However, the production of this fuel is still in its early stages. In 2023, this corresponded to 0.5% of global aviation fuel demand.

Because of this low availability, its price is still three to five times higher than fossil kerosene, according to Lufthansa. “The more SAF production increases, the more its price will decrease,” a group spokesman explained to AFP.

Until its price comes down, Lufthansa warned that may continue to influence This is an additional cost in the ticket price.

This eco-surcharge is in addition to another surcharge, this time optional, offered to travelers by Lufthansa and other airlines to offset carbon emissions through climate protection projects.
