(CNN) — Manuel Rocha, the former US ambassador to Bolivia accused of acting as a secret foreign agent for Cuba, said in court on Thursday that he plans to plead guilty to his charges.
Rocha, 73, has been charged with multiple counts, including acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government, wire fraud and making false statements to investigators. Prosecutors have alleged that the former US diplomat worked for decades as a “covert agent of Cuban intelligence services”.
According to the court file, during a hearing this Thursday in Miami, Rocha and prosecutors “announced that the defendant will change his plea to guilty.” Rocha pleaded not guilty earlier this month.
Court records do not provide any information about the charges to which Rocha plans to plead guilty. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 12.
Rocha was the US Ambassador to Bolivia from 2000 to 2002 and Deputy Director of the US Interests Section in Cuba in the 1990s. Rocha also worked for the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic as well as the US Consulate in Italy in the 1980s. Performed separate assignments for the US embassies in Mexico and Argentina.
According to the indictment, his role as political officer at the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic gave him “special responsibility” for Cuba.
According to court documents, in several meetings with an undercover FBI employee posing as a member of Cuban intelligence, Rocha repeatedly referred to the United States as the “enemy” and criticized Cuban revolutionaries and Admired the politician Fidel Castro.
