many users receive an ultimatum from the platform
Netflix killed its most popular plan, but it didn’t hurt its finances: quite the opposite.
It seems more or less clear that Netflix intends to force us to watch ads on the platform or pay a significant amount of money to avoid watching them. The abolition of the old Basic Plan is taking place very little by little.: A year ago, in July 2023, we learned that it was disappearing in Canada and the UK, as well as the US. A pilot experience that could eventually spread to other markets, as happened with the announcement that this solution had reached Germany, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Spain, which for practical purposes benefited many users.
And after the announcement, there was a firing squad: Numerous Reddit users warned that they were receiving ultimatums from the company. Either they switch plans (to a significantly more expensive plan without ads, or a cheaper one with ads) or lose their subscription. The notifications came mostly via email, but there were also cases where TV notifications appeared detailing the day the plan would end.
7 TIPS to help you get the most out of NETFLIX
This is not unexpected: Netflix has already announced its plans, and in countries like Spain, the platform’s plans page states very clearly that “The Basic plan is no longer available to new or existing subscribers. If you currently have a Basic plan, you can keep it until you change plans or close your account.”
Netflix is currently renting the plan: the ad-supported Standard has already reached 40 million monthly active users worldwide. A significant increase considering it wasn’t introduced until late 2022, and the growth is undoubtedly due to the elimination of Basic.
