Venezuelan communists say Maduro has taken a “step of no return to authoritarianism”
The traditional leaders of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) said this Wednesday that the government of Nicolás Maduro has taken a “step of no return towards very dangerous forms of authoritarianism and state terrorism”, after the presidential elections whose official result gave victory to the president, and protests broke out throughout the country.
“The acute political crisis in Venezuela has exposed the reactionary nature of the government -PSUV (United Socialist Party of Venezuela), which has spared no step towards very dangerous forms of authoritarianism and state terrorism,” he said in a note issued by the PCV, a formation intervened by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).
Likewise, they denounced that, after the elections, there were “arrests of minors, women and people with disabilities”, “arbitrary and humiliating searches in the streets”, “illegal raids on homes and theft of goods”, as well as “cancellation of passports”.
“This policy of terror is nourished by psychological and propaganda campaigns”, the PCV assured, which aim to “neutralize popular protest”.
Maduro’s re-election occurred after the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared the president’s victory, which was later validated by the TSJ, a month after the presidential election, without publishing the separate results as established in the schedule of the electoral process.
The main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), has claimed that its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, won the election by a large margin, supported by the publication on a website of an “83.5% electoral record” compiled by witnesses and polling station members on election night, documents that have been supported by several countries and international organizations, and rejected by the government.
The executive rejects the minutes issued by the opposition and holds the leader of the PUD and its main supporter, María Corina Machado, responsible for the deaths recorded during the protests, as well as for the acts of “violence” that caused material damage in several public places.
