Mercadona is closing two of its stores in Trobajo to open a larger store in Agustinos.

Monday, July 22, 2024, 2:25 PM.

Mercadona is moving into the Leon area. The supermarket chain will close its two stores in Trobajo del Camino and open a new store on Avenida Agustinos.

The company has already started work on this new infrastructure, which will require an investment of 3.8 million euros to create a large building next to the school located on the Alfageme road.

The Valencian company has acquired a plot of more than 5,000 square meters to create this new supermarket, with a built-up area of 3,344 square meters, including the store and parking. The sales area will occupy 1,747 square meters of the total area, and the parking will accommodate 143 cars and will have four spaces for electric vehicles.

Investments in photovoltaic panels, which will provide the store with 568 modules, also played an important role. This will save 20% of annual energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions by 30 tons.

Mercadona explains that the opening of this new store will mean the closure of the day before the opening of the stores located in the neighboring Plaza La Huerta and in Parroco Pablo Diez, leaving the closest link to this latter location as the one they have in the Leon Plaza shopping center.

Work has already begun on Avenida Agustinos, 313, where a new store will be built for the Leonese capital and its surroundings. The skeleton of the building will be erected in the next few months, and the opening was not planned for this year 2024.

New services

The supermarket will have a “Ready to Eat” section where you can enjoy cold drinks and ready to eat meals served in packaging made from materials such as sugar cane, cardboard or paper.

It will have a new entrance with double glazing to prevent draughts, wider corridors and a seating area with chairs and tables.

In addition, it already has a new efficient store format that provides more spacious and open spaces for access to external light, as well as colours and materials on the external facade and in the sections.

In terms of energy efficiency, the Alfageme supermarket will reduce energy consumption by up to 40% due to better thermal and sound insulation, as well as optimization of materials – the thickness of walls and ceilings or freezers. The lighting is LED, adjustable depending on the time of day.

Ergonomics and stress-relief technologies have been implemented for employees, such as new checkout furniture. The store has common areas where employees can have fun during breaks.
