Messenger RNA (mRNA)-based medicine has marked a before and after era in the biomedical field, enabling significant advances in the treatment of diseases and the creation of highly personalized vaccines. His role was pivotal in the accelerated development of Covid-19 vaccines, an achievement recognized by Nobel Prizes. In this context and with the aim of educating and updating knowledge about the benefits and versatility of mRNA, the International University of Menendez Pelayo (UIMP) in collaboration with Moderna, conducted the second edition of the Messenger RNA Medicine course. created in the first week of the summer course academic programs and taught on June 20 and 21 at La Magdalena Palace in Santander.
“The course program offers a path from fundamental scientific concepts of messenger RNA to its interdisciplinary application in the medical field with the goal of integrating the various applications of this innovative technology.”
explained Jaime Jesus Perezcourse director and president of the Spanish Association of Vaccinology (AEV). “Training new generations, as well as continuing to train those already practicing, is critical. This allows us to stay abreast of the latest discoveries and adapt to medical innovations to offer patients the best possible care and contribute to the advancement of science.”At the meeting, participants were asked to analyze revolutionary impact of messenger RNA in modern medicine, looking at aspects such as its effectiveness and safety in the treatment of various diseases. The role of Spain in this area of research is similarly discussed.
In this context, Jose Maria GuillenMedical Director of Moderna España, highlighted the versatility of this technology and the revolution it represents in the way certain pathologies are treated. “Advances in the field of mRNA medicine represent a revolution in the approach to certain diseases. This technology has opened the door to a wide range of therapeutic applications, from established Covid vaccines to new opportunities in immunization against respiratory and latent viruses, as well as the treatment of certain types of cancer or rare diseases. “
Since its inception in 2010, Moderna has used its messenger RNA platform to create the next generation of transformative vaccines and medicines that improve people’s lives. The same mRNA technology and the extensive knowledge of scientists specializing in this matter is what allowing biopharmaceutical companies to develop effective and safe solutions in record time.
“From Spain, we are promoting various initiatives that will allow our country to become a leader in the field of mRNA medicine. The most notable of these is the launch of the new state-of-the-art MadridLad International Center of Analytical Excellence for mRNA Vaccines. This one-year-old quality laboratory is the company’s first and only laboratory with these capabilities outside the US, allowing it to cover the entire value chain: produce and distribute vaccines from Spain to more than 60 countries around the world
“– noted Guillen. In its turn, Jaime Jesusinfluenced the need to stimulate investment in science. “Exactly We will be able to better understand diseases, identify risk factors and develop effective treatments to improve people’s health and well-being. In addition, investment in science also stimulates innovation in medicine, which in turn contributes to the development of society as a whole.”completed.
