More than fifty researchers from the Institute of Oncology of Asturias (IUOPA, University of Oviedo) meet this weekend in Corias (Cangas del Narcea) to share and discuss the latest advances in cancer research in our region. The working days are organized in the context of scientific retreats, a common initiative of research centers around the world, which IUOPA is now launching in Asturias.
Over the course of two days, the researchers present to the rest of the Institute of Oncology staff the design and main directions of their research groups. On the other hand, young researchers also have the opportunity to present their latest achievements in technical presentations.
Among the topics covered are the development of new bioinformatics tools for studying mutations in various types of cancer, the creation of transgenic animals to better understand the molecular mechanisms of malignant transformation, and the importance of natural defense systems in the human body. regulation of the antitumor immune response, the fundamental role of prevention revealed by epidemiological studies, great advances in the development of new treatments for rare tumors affecting the youngest people. It also explores the fundamental role that computational biology and the analysis of massive amounts of data are playing in understanding disease and developing biomarkers useful in clinical practice.
Microorganism in the development of antitumor drugs
The role of research with microorganisms in the development of new anticancer drugs and the relationship between metabolism and disease is becoming clearer. Thus, the conference aims to highlight the coordinated work of expert researchers in various fields of cancer and to witness the excellent integration between basic and clinical researchers that takes place in our region.
“These types of activities promote interaction between different groups of the institute and are extremely inspiring and motivating, especially for the little ones,” the organization emphasizes. “This all comes together in the launch of new collaborative projects and the development of shared visions that lead to projects of higher scientific quality,” they add.
The meeting provides an opportunity to take stock of the state of cancer research in Asturias, to intensify areas of improvement and to set new goals that allow us to consolidate the high scientific quality that we have in cancer research in our region.
