New iPads have gone up in price again. But inflation changes history

The new iPad Pro has already been unveiled, finally with an OLED screen and the M4 chip making its debut on the market. Apple also announced the new iPad Air, which will be released in the sixth generation, in addition to the 11-inch, and also in the 13th, like its older brother.

Improvements on the one hand, and on the other, allow them to have starting prices, which, as always, have to be compared with the prices of their predecessors.

Numbers. These are the prices for the base models (minimum storage, Wi-Fi only) of the new iPads:

  • iPad Air 11 inches: 699 euros
  • iPad Air 13 inches: 949 euros
  • iPad Pro 11 inches: 1199 euros.
  • iPad Pro 13 inches: 1549 euros

Of course, they are all somewhat more expensive than their previous versions. We see this in this graph, which shows all prices (in euros and Spain) for base iPad models from the original to today:

The role of inflation. The above is a graph that does not take into account the passage of time. We must adjust these prices for inflation, as we always do, regardless of brand. This is a way to correct the passage of time.

10 euros today is not the same as 10 euros in 2010: then we could do more with it. Here’s what it would look like if we adjusted these prices:

Correction. In real terms, the 2024 13-inch iPad Pro is slightly cheaper than the previous model, but the trend is for prices to rise steadily above inflation. Something similar happens with the 11-inch model.

The 11-inch iPad Air is the cheapest it’s been in years, and it also seems like a compelling device for those looking for something more than the entry-level models without the Pro price tag. The 13-inch Air sits in the center category between its little brother and the smaller Pro.
