New Tavascan, the revolutionary electric Cupra SUV developed in Barcelona

Cupra goes out. It sells more cars than ever and still has high customer satisfaction. Its product offensive for 2024 consists of the Tavascan, which the brand is presenting internationally these days in Barcelona, and the Terramar (a slightly smaller SUV), which will arrive next. The Martorell brand also recently introduced plug-in hybrid versions of the Cupra León and Cupra Formentor.

Ready for marketing, the brand will be taking orders for the new Tavascan starting in June, with first deliveries to begin after the summer.

Second electric, after Born

Tavascan is Cupra’s first coupe-like electric SUV. And the second battery model after Born. “It’s not just a car, it’s a look at the future.” That’s how Wayne Griffiths, president of Seat and Cupra, explained what the new Tavascan is a few months ago.

This is a new impetus for Cupra with a bold and innovative design language.

Named after the Pyrenees city of Lleida, the model features a striking new design language with sporty proportions that somehow breaks the norm for a new generation of drivers.

Designed and developed in Barcelona, it is manufactured in China and is positioned as an alternative to heavyweight competitors such as the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, Skoda Enyaq Coupé or Volkswagen ID.5.

The launch version that Cupra is putting up for sale is called the Tavascan First Edition and costs €52,010.

But looking at its design and its presence on the road, it would appear that Cupra has once again pushed its styling further than its line-mates, with more daring, with more audacity. Typical Cupra. In any case, this is another SUV that the brand wants to sell around 70,000 units per year.

The launch version that Cupra is putting up for sale is called the Tavascan First Edition and costs €52,010 – a price that does not include discounts, advertising campaigns or Plan Moves III.

Endurance version with 286 hp. and rear-wheel drive has a range of 568 km.

On the other hand, the brand has simplified the line and offers two versions: Endurance with a single engine producing 286 hp. and rear-wheel drive (52,010 euros) and VZ with two engines producing 340 hp. and all-wheel drive (still not). price). Both versions use a 77 kWh battery. Autonomy in the case of Endurance with 286 hp. is an excellent 568 kilometers. And, somewhat less, the VZ with two engines and all-wheel drive has a cruising range of 522 km.

The figures have always been approved with 19-inch wheels, although the brand offers 20- and 21-inch wheels as an option. The maximum speed for both versions is 180 km/h. And acceleration is 5.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h for the VZ, the fastest, and 6.8 seconds for the Endurance.

The battery is charged at a power of 135 kW in fast chargers or 11 kW in conventional ones. And, in the best case, it will be able to restore from 10 to 80% of the battery charge in just 28 minutes.

A large 15-inch screen stands out in the center of the dashboard.

It’s interesting to note that Cupra is committed to ensuring battery capacity doesn’t drop below 70% with an 8-year/160,000km warranty. A plug&charge system is included as standard, which recognizes the vehicle and allows charging without the need to activate any app.

The Tavascan features an infotainment system with a 15-inch screen, the largest in a Cupra.

Cupra understands that digitalization is a key element of modern cars. To achieve this, the Tavascan features an infotainment system with a 15-inch screen, the largest in a Cupra. Plus premium details such as the optional high-performance audio system with 12 Sennheiser signature speakers.

On the other hand, the cabin combines innovative materials and driver-oriented space. A structural element that Cupra calls the “spine” helps define and position the floating elements. This interior framework integrates the body of the center console with the instrument panel, as if it were an architectural resource, providing a feeling of lightness.

The trunk has a volume of 540 liters, which can be expanded by folding the rear seat backrest.

In addition, the seats are upholstered in environmentally friendly materials such as recycled polyester, and the front seats feature a sporty Bucket design. Space for driver and passengers is very good, as is visibility from the front seats. And it can have a glass roof covered with a practical cover.

The double height boot has plenty of space, is easy to access and with a capacity of 540 liters is really good for family travel.

This electric SUV with a rather sporty appearance has a tuned chassis, as is usually the case with Cupra.

Tavascan is an electric SUV with a rather sporty appearance. Enjoy the tuned chassis as Cupra always does. The 340 hp VZ version we drove includes the DCC Sport adaptive chassis, sports suspension and progressive steering.

Everything is designed so that the car always has a good attitude towards corners. It’s now a heavy SUV measuring 4.64 meters in length, and it shows. However, it happens that with two electric motors it accelerates strongly and ultimately seems more maneuverable.

Designed and developed in Barcelona, Tavascan is manufactured at the Volkswagen Group plant in Anhui (China).

With Cupra or Performance driving modes, the Tavascan becomes more rigid and accelerates even more superbly. But for travel, Comfort mode will always be preferable. And energy recovery can be controlled using steering wheel paddles at three different levels.

Additional packages

It is available in 5 different colors: Tavascan Blue, Silver White, Atacama Desert, Basalto Gray and Century Matte Bronze, the latter color already available in the third quarter of 2025.

Likewise, Cupra offers three optional packages: Adrenaline (21-inch wheels, Matrix LED or Sennheiser sound system), Extreme (21-inch forged wheels or Performance tires) and Winter (with heat pump) to complete or customize the equipment.
