US President Joe Biden and his national security team are considering response options after three US service members were killed and dozens of others injured in Jordan, the White House said Monday morning.
John Kirby, the National Security Council’s coordinator for strategic communications, told CNN’s Phil Mattingly that the president is “working through ‘response options’ at this time.”
Kirby said, “He had a good meeting yesterday with the national security team. He still has a chance to make a decision and he will certainly be on top of it.”
As to which group was responsible for the attack, Kirby said the administration was still “studying and identifying which group was specifically responsible.”
“I think we have a pretty good idea,” Kirby said, “and we certainly believe that the group was supported by Kata’ib Hezbollah, which is one of the main IRGC-backed groups in Iraq and Syria. Who is carrying out such activities. Many of these attacks have taken place against our soldiers in our facilities.
Kirby also said that although it was the first deadly attack against US military personnel in the region since the October 7 attacks, it was far from the first attempt.
“It did not have lethal consequences like the previous attacks, but that does not mean that the intent of the previous attacks was not lethal, just that we were able to defeat them,” he said.
