Nintendo confirmed that its next console will be backwards compatible with the current Nintendo Switch while presenting quarterly results to investors.
One of the slides confirms that the Switch successor will allow you to play Nintendo Switch software. It was once again confirmed that, as announced in May last year, the presentation of the new console will take place before the end of the current financial year (March 31, 2025).
According to Shuntaro Furukawa, the company’s CEO, users “will be able to play the Nintendo Switch software they currently own and will be able to choose their next purchase from a wide selection of games released for Nintendo Switch.”
This part of the presentation is part of a section on the Nintendo Account and how it will allow purchases to be transferred to a future console, but what we’re missing today are details like whether the future console will have a Switch cartridge reader.
However, according to Furukawa, we’ll have to wait for more specific details about backwards compatibility “later.”
Introduced in December 2015, Nintendo Account currently has over 366 million users, including mobile app users.
The Japanese company’s CEO has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service will still be available on the upcoming console. One of the slides focuses on additional features they want with the service, such as the recently released Nintendo Music app.
