Nintendo’s future console is starting to take shape

  • New leaks point to a larger console with a magnetic Joy-Con

  • Its launch is expected in early 2025.

It’s not official, but at this point it’s no secret that Nintendo is working on a new Nintendo Switch. Rumors and leaks about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 continue to appear and the latest information, provided exclusively by the Spanish portal Vandal, speaks of a larger, more powerful console with interesting new Joy-Con features.

More than Nintendo Switch. According to the above-mentioned media, information comes from a number of accessory manufacturers who have already managed to get their first blind acquaintance with the console. Apparently, these people would be able to climb into the box, touch the console and get an idea of its size and weight. According to these sources, Vandal claims the console is larger than the Nintendo Switch, “though not the size of a Steam Deck.”

Magnetic Joy-Con. The second novelty is related to controllers, also known as Joy-Con. Apparently, the Nintendo Switch 2 will ditch the rail-based lacing system in favor of a magnetic clasp. This would solve the need for perfect placement of on-screen controls to use the console in handheld mode (not easy if we were doing it in a hurry), and would also mean that the current generation Joy-Cons would also not have reverse functionality as accessories. compatibility, at least in portable mode.

Not expected in 2024. According to Vandal, citing accessory manufacturers, Nintendo already has a ready-made console, but they are waiting for new games. Thus, the launch is expected not in 2024, but in early 2025. This is consistent with other rumors and leaks spotted earlier.

What else is expected. Other recent leaks from accessory maker Mobapad claim that the Switch 2’s Bluetooth chip is compatible with the current Joy-Con and Pro controllers (so at least in tabletop mode we can use them to play with friends) and that the current Switch cartridges compatible with Switch 2. However, Switch 2 cartridges will not be usable on current consoles. They also mention new control buttons and a larger eight-inch screen with FullHD resolution. Either way, it’s best to take this leak with a grain of salt.

On the other hand, there are rumors that the screen will be LCD (not OLED) and will have an NVIDIA Tegra T239 processor, about which little is known, but whose advantage will be the Ampere architecture and its DLSS compatibility, something that could mean ” before and after on a Nintendo console. However, all indications are that we still have plenty of time to see this console with our own eyes, so we’ll have to be patient.
