North Korea destroys roads connecting to the South – DW – 10/15/2024

The South Korean military reported that North Korea destroyed several sections of roads connecting its territory with South Korea in the highly militarized border area this Tuesday (10/15/2024).

South Korea’s military said it fired warning shots along the so-called Military Demarcation Line, which divides the two Koreas, in response to Pyongyang’s move to blow up parts of the inter-Korean highway.

Around noon, parts of the highway north of the Military Demarcation Line (DMZ) dividing the two countries were destroyed, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a message to the media.

“North Korea detonated explosives along parts of the Gyeongui and Donghae highways,” the military report detailed.

Pyongyang announced last week that it was cutting and strengthening roads and railways connecting to the south in response to a recently passed constitutional amendment that is believed to have been ordered by ruler Kim-un. But have unilaterally redefined national boundaries.

Experts say roads and railways between the two Koreas have been closed for years, but their destruction sends a clear message that Kim is unwilling to negotiate with the South.

Tension has increased in the Korean Peninsula after North Korea accused its rival of sending drones to the country’s capital Pyongyang.

North Korea said Friday that drones had spread “leaflets” in the city, an incident it described as a political and military provocation that could lead to armed conflict.
