A recent study found that electric cars are not as environmentally friendly as previously thought.

Electric cars are presented as a solution to the mobility problems of thousands of cities. Governments around the world are committed to this sustainable alternative, ensuring it is a zero-emission system, but Study debunks the biggest lie about these vehicles.

The research team analyzed whether consumers buying an electric car leave a carbon footprint. Pollution is inevitable in terms of vehicle production, power supply or parts recycling, but they compared it to internal combustion engine cars to see if they were worth it.

The study, conducted by the University of Turku (Finland), involved 3,857 drivers. Nils Sandman, Elisa Sahari and Aki Koponen analyzed their lifestyles, car use, views on the environment and their experiences with electric vehicles.

People buying these cars have some common characteristics: they are young, have a high income level, drive long distances, can charge the car at home, and are interested in technology and an urban lifestyle.

If they travel on average more kilometers per year, they also increases the cost of electricity for charging vehicles. This energy is most often generated in a plant that burns coal, one of the most polluting methods, and emits the largest amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

29% of electric vehicle drivers want to return to internal combustion engines not only because of range or problems with charging infrastructure. The study shows that lower levels of pollution while driving do not offset the higher carbon footprint of vehicle charging.
