A new month brings new content to one of the best streaming services. Netflix appears to be expanding its May lineup, which is good for people who like to explore new genres. Personally, I love all things horror, but sometimes I just don’t feel like it. So as I watch countless thrillers and horror films, I find myself gravitating towards a good romantic drama.
I’ll watch Edge of Seventeen when I don’t feel like sitting on the edge of my seat and sweating in fear. This movie combines romance, drama and comedy and is perfect for a relaxing evening with your favorite snacks. Even though it came out eight years ago, it still stands out among other comedies. Rotten Tomatoes high rating.
If you’re binging on all the movies and TV shows released on Netflix today but aren’t sure what you’re in the mood for, give Edge of Seventeen a try. I’ll tell you more about its plot and share some reviews below to convince you even more.
What is the film “Edge of Seventeen” about?
Everyone knows that growing up is never easy, especially for high school student Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who still doesn’t know how to overcome her awkwardness. To make matters worse, Nadine accidentally discovers that her older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) has started dating her childhood best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). Now, with overwhelming pressure to find her place in the world, mixed with broken friendships, she feels more alone than ever. That is until she befriends Erwin (Hayden Szeto), a thoughtful teenager who makes things a little easier.
The Edge of Seventeen is a coming-of-age film that shows Nadine’s perspective of growing up alone. Change and growth are an important part of a teenager’s life, and she struggles to support herself even in her darkest moments.
You may not immediately like Nadine due to her constant self-pity, but the character development throughout the film is worth it. During this time, she must learn to build friendships, cope with family traumas, and love herself, even when she is on the verge of losing it.
Critics loved The Edge of Seventeen – here’s what they said
The Edge of Seventeen still has an impressive 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a high audience rating of 83%. Even eight years after its release, the film remains a classic romantic comedy that everyone should see, whether you’re a teenager or not.
Kristen Lopez from Cultures said, “The Edge of Seventeen has been compared to the work of John Hughes because it is destined to become a classic book that teenagers will turn to for solace.” And this is indeed very true. Meanwhile, Empire Magazine Olly Richards believes the film “tackles all the usual teenage issues – dating, family, school – in a way that tries to transcend genre clichés, with a heroine who is often unlikeable but always believable.”
Mara Reinstein from USA Weekly also spoke truths on the subject of puberty: “With a keen sense of humor and incredibly spot-on one-liners, this film will touch anyone who’s ever had to ride that tidal wave of teenage angst. By the way, that’s all.”
Although reviews will also come with a little criticism. Screen International’s Tim Grierson said: “There’s sweetness and a dash of wisdom to be found in The Edge of Seventeen, a sweet coming-of-age comedy-drama too generic to recommend but entertaining enough to make you wonder who its writer, director and stars are. “I’ll do it next.”
Watch Edge of Seventeen on Netflix today
You can now watch The Edge of Seventeen on Netflixand honestly, it’s worth every second. This film beautifully depicts the journey of a troubled teenager who can’t find his place in the world, with broken friendships and family traumas that make life even worse. Everyone goes through the process of growing up, so in some sense everyone should be able to communicate.
Steinfeld’s performance makes the film even better. As a teenager playing a teenager, she was able to capture Nadine’s every significant thought and emotion. I will always remember romance dramas that have real and relatable characters that aren’t completely one-dimensional and scripted.
