(CNN)- One person was found dead after two explosions near the Brazilian Supreme Court and Congress in Brasília, CNN Brazil reports.
According to CNN Brazil, one explosion occurred outside the Supreme Court, while the other occurred on the street next to Annex 4 of the nearby Congress.
One person died in the explosions, CNN Brazil reported, citing Brasília’s executive secretary of public security.
Earlier, CNN Brazil initially reported that officials said the blast was a suicide attack. It is unknown whether authorities still consider this to be the case.
Military police are searching the area and police are investigating whether there is any connection between the cases, CNN Brazil reports.
Citing a Supreme Court spokesperson, CNN Brazil reported that Federal Security Police were at the scene and the Plaza de los Tres Poderes, which houses the three branches of the Brazilian government, was closed.
CNN Brazil also reported that court judges were removed after the explosions in the capital, Brasília.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Jorge Messias, condemned the attacks and said that the Federal Police would “vigorously and urgently investigate the explosions in the perimeter of the Plaza de los Tres Poderes.”
“I strongly condemn the attacks against the Supreme Federal Court and the Chamber of Deputies. “I express my solidarity with the ministers and MPs,” he said in X. “We need to understand the motivation behind these attacks, as well as restore peace and security as quickly as possible.”
Dissatisfaction with the court is growing as it has expanded its jurisdiction over cases involving political extremism, disinformation and threats to the democratic system.
While some consider it necessary to protect Brazil’s democracy, critics have condemned it as judicial overreach aimed at limiting conservative voices.
