Spain is Europe’s second-largest car producer, producing around 2.45 million units last year, but the cars produced here are not the most popular on the national market. In fact, the vast majority of 90% of products are exported to countries such as Germany, France, UK, Italy or Turkey, our main customers. According to the associations of car manufacturers (Anfac), sellers (Ganvam) and dealers (Faconauto), only three of the ten best-selling models in Spain between January and May 2024 were produced nationally. The two cars with the most registrations during this period were the Dacia Sandero (13,068 sales), produced in Morocco, and the Toyota Corolla (10,197 sales), produced in the United Kingdom. You’ll have to go to the third most popular car to find the first car with the Spanish stamp – the Seat Ibiza, which is produced exclusively worldwide at the Martorell plant (Barcelona), of which 9,202 units were sold until May.
After it, the second most popular nationally produced car in Spain also belongs to Seat, the Arona, which is produced exclusively in Martorell and of which 9,091 units were sold. Third place is completed by the Peugeot 2008, assembled in Vigo in both electric and combustion engine versions, of which more than 8,800 were delivered. The latter is the country’s largest plant, with almost 532,000 vehicles produced last year, a significant proportion of which are commercial vehicles, as the Galician plant produces all models of Stellantis small vans for the Fiat, Citroën, Opel and Peugeot brands.
In fourth place is the legendary Opel Corsa model, which is produced as a world exclusive at the Zaragoza plant in both electric and internal combustion engine versions. Until May, 7,697 units were sold in Spain. The top five is completed by the hybrid Renault Captur, a new version of which was released this year and is produced in Valladolid. It is one of five new models that the French group has transferred to its Spanish factories in 2021 in a bid to make Spain a hub for hybrid production, while leaving EV production to its French factories. This decision, with electric vehicles and hybrids stagnating as a fashion vehicle type both in Spain and the rest of Europe, leaves the Palencia and Valladolid plants in a good position for the coming years. production of models with potentially good sales volume.
In sixth place is the Peugeot 208, the successful model of the lion brand, almost 6,100 units of which were delivered in Spain until May. This car was produced in Morocco, but the company recently decided to also supply it to the assembly lines of the Zaragoza plant, in both electric and combustion engine versions. It is followed by the Volkswagen T-Cross, produced exclusively in Landaben (Navarra), with around 5,700 registrations in Spain in the first five months of 2024. It is followed by two more models produced exclusively in Barcelona: the Seat Leon and the Cupra Formentor with 5,328 and 5,118 sales respectively. Finally, the list is completed by the Citroën C4, which is produced exclusively in electric and petrol versions in Madrid, with 4,777 sales in Spain.
