Men’s triathlon postponed due to Seine water quality
Following a meeting on water quality held on Tuesday at 3.30am, attended by Paris 2024, representatives of World Triathlon and its technical and medical delegates, the International Olympic Committee, Météo France, the City of Paris and the Prefecture of Paris, the Ile-de-France region, which is involved in carrying out water quality tests, decided to postpone the men’s triathlon test, which was due to take place on 30 July at 8am.
Taking into account the latest weather data, the men’s triathlon will be held on 31 July at 10:45. The women’s triathlon will be held on the same day at 8:00. Both will have to complete upcoming water tests that meet the World Triathlon swimming thresholds. A reserve day has been announced for 2 August.
Paris 2024 and World Triathlon confirm that their priority is the health of their athletes. Tests carried out today in the Seine have revealed water quality levels that do not provide sufficient guarantees for the event to take place.
Unfortunately, meteorological events beyond our control, such as the rains that fell in Paris on July 26 and 27, may alter the water quality and force us to reschedule the test for health reasons. Despite the improvement in water quality in recent hours, readings at some points along the swimming route are still above acceptable limits.
We will provide athletes scheduled to compete in the men’s triathlon with all the information regarding the postponement, as well as a live update on the situation. Updated ticketing information and the live streaming of the tests on Wednesday, July 31 will be released in the next few hours.
World Triathlon will meet with coaches at 8am today to provide further information and an updated programme for 31 July.
