Part Two revives North American box office with big opening

Los Angeles (AFP) – Adding some spice to an otherwise meager film year, Warner Bros.’ New sci-fi film “Dune: Part Two,” released this weekend, topped the North American box office, grossing about $81.5 million, an industry observer said Sunday.

“This is a remarkable opening” for the sci-fi sequel, said analyst David A. Gross, adding that the expansive international cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Léa Seydoux and Javier Bardem provide additional impetus.

Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel to the original Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel about war and survival on the extremely inhospitable desert planet Arrakis, was the biggest opening of the new year, roughly doubling the original film’s opening. Dune: Part Two grossed an additional $97 million overseas.

Its strong start left the last two weekend’s box office leader, Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, in the dust or sand, as the biopic grossed just $7.4 million and finished in second place. British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir plays the iconic reggae singer.

In third place were the latest episodes of Fathom Events and Angel Studios’ faith-based series The Chosen, which focuses on the life of Jesus Christ, with a price tag of $3.9 million. Egyptian native Jonathan Rumi plays Jesus in the crowdfunded series.

Lionsgate’s true-life drama “Ordinary Angels” took fourth place with $3.8 million. Hilary Swank plays a Kentucky hairdresser who rallies her town to help a widower with a seriously ill daughter.

Sony’s “Madame Web,” the “Spider-Man” spinoff starring Dakota Johnson, was in fifth place for the weekend with $3.2 million.

Rounding out the top ten are:

“Migration” ($2.5 million)

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba ($2.1 million)

“Wonka” ($1.7 million)

Argyle ($1.4 million)

“The Beekeeper” ($1.1 million)
