The Provincial Council of Badajoz, through the Ecological Transition Zone, organised it at the La Cocosa Estate Sky Promotion and Protection Centre (CPPC).
The session will consist of observing them with the naked eye and other astronomical phenomena through telescopes.
The Perseids, also known as the Tears of St. Lawrence, are one of the most spectacular and anticipated meteor showers of the year.
An astronomical phenomenon that occurs every summer, usually peaking in mid-August. It occurs when the Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, causing dust and ice particles to enter our atmosphere.
Scattered at high speed, these particles produce bright flashes in the night sky, offering a spectacular spectacle of shooting stars visible in both hemispheres.
The Perseids owe their name to the constellation Perseus, from which they seem to emanate, and their popular nickname of “Tears of St. Lawrence” is due to the proximity of their appearance to the feast of St. Lawrence on August 10, as recalled in a note from the Provincial Council of Badajoz.
Anyone wishing to participate in this event must apply for registration through the general activity forms available in the virtual office of the website of the Ecological Transition Zone of the Provincial Council of Badajoz.
The number of places is limited and participants will be provided with a free bus from the city of Badajoz to get to the observation site, as it is not accessible by any other means of transport. The meeting point and departure point for the bus will be El Hospital Centro Vivo at 22:30.
The aim of the CPPC is to raise awareness among citizens of the problems caused by light pollution, as well as to promote the conservation of the night sky of Extremadura as a driving force for municipal development and, through increased activity, to value the starry sky of Extremadura.
Thanks to these actions, the Ecological Transition Zone of the Provincial Council of Badajoz continues to work on the development of the “Extremadura, Good Night” strategy, which highlights the starry night sky of Extremadura and offers this unique resource to everyone, as well as invites them to get to know and enjoy it.
