PharmaMar Foundation honors healthcare research and innovation

in collaboration with the Farmamar Foundation

Recognizing the achievements of science and scientific health, emphasizing their important role for the progress of society was the central axis of the ceremony for the presentation of the second edition Argonauta Awards from the PharmaMar Foundationtook place in Madrid. These awards, which aim to once again highlight people and projects that have made significant contributions to the development of medicine and research, have brought together the most eminent figures of the scientific and medical scene, both nationally and internationally.

During the event, Jose Maria Fernandez Souza-FaroPresident of the PharmaMar Foundation, emphasized: “The value of science is necessary to promote its development and highlight its importance in society. This year’s applications demonstrated not only the quality and diversity of the research projects, but also the commitment of the teams responsible for developing innovative solutions. Through these awards, we also aim to encourage researchers and clinicians to explore new frontiers that advance scientific research and improve healthcare.”

The event presented awards in four key categories, each designed to recognize outstanding achievements in different areas of research. He Lifetime Achievement Award for Basic Research was awarded to Dr. Ignacio Melero Bermejo, Co-Director of the Service of Immunology and Immunotherapy of the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA) of the University of Navarra, for his contribution to translational research in the field of cancer immunotherapy using strategies based on cells, genes and monoclonal antibodies. And for his pioneering work in costimulating antitumor immune responses and identifying biomarkers that help predict patient response to immunotherapy.

He Clinical Research Achievement Award was taken to the doctor Ana Oknin BenzaquenHead of the Gynecological Tumors Unit at the Val d’Hebron Hospital and Head of the Gynecological Neoplasms Group at the Val d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) for her efforts to transform the treatment of gynecological neoplasms worldwide and her pioneering work in the research and development of personalized molecular therapies and immunological treatments that have made significant improvements in the treatment of these types of cancer. And Dr. Mariano Provencio Pulla, head of the department of medical oncology of the Puerta de Hierro Hospital, who revolutionized the treatment of lung cancer by introducing chemotherapy in combination with neoadjuvant immunotherapy, led the use of prognostic and predictive markers in liquid biopsy and was a pioneer in the use of big data for explanations of clinical and molecular data of cancer patients.

He award for the best scientific clinical case from the PharmaMar group of companies was awarded to Dr. Mar Galera Lopez, medical oncologist at the Dr. Peseta University Hospital, for his research into the diagnosis and treatment of clear cell sarcoma, a rare tumor difficult to treat, achieving a significant clinical response after several lines of therapy. thus highlighting the importance of continuing to explore innovative treatment options for this disease with few therapeutic alternatives. The clinical case was conducted during his stay at the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Rosa Alvarez, Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital.

This year, PharmaMar also recognizes the efforts of young researchers under the age of 42 who are outstanding in the field of oncology.

Finally, this year a new category was introduced to recognize the efforts of young researchers under 42 years old who distinguished themselves in oncology. Thus, the Best Young Investigator Award was awarded to Dr. Biola M. Javier, group leader of the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute, for her specialization in the study of genetically complex diseases, in particular autoimmune diseases and blood cancers, from an epigenetic perspective.

As a new feature, they were also presented with awards during the event assistance in additional training in the field of medical oncology two fifth-year residents (R-5) to provide them with the opportunity to strengthen specialized knowledge and skills in the treatment of oncological pathologies with limited therapeutic options. Dr. Rafael Buesas Pérez from the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital and Dr. Maria Palma Gómez from the Gregorio Marañon University Hospital will receive this support for training focused on the treatment of small cell lung cancer and soft tissue sarcomas, respectively.

The jury for this issue was headed by famous scientistsas Dr. Paco Sánchez Madrid, Head of the Immunology Department at La Princesa Hospital; Dr. Javier Martín Broto, Head of the Sarcoma Unit at the Villalba General Hospital; Dr. Mariano Provencio, Head of the Oncology Department of the Puerta de Hierro Hospital; and Dr. Blanca Lopez-Ibor, Pediatric Oncology Specialist at His Majesty’s Pediatric Oncology Unit of Monteprincipe.

The jury of this publication is headed by famous scientific figures.

During the event, the PharmaMar Foundation summed up the results of the second year of its activities, emphasizing achievements achieved in its mission to promote the dissemination of scientific knowledge, training and recognition of research talent.

Among the most relevant initiatives, the second edition of the series of scientific conferences for all audiences was highlighted, around which eight lectureswith almost a thousand participants and speakers of national and international prestige; cooperation with Spanish Lung Cancer Association (AEACaP), which contributed to the delivery of medical knowledge to patients with this disease; support for the eSarcoma project developed by the Sarcoma Centers, Services and Referral Units (CSUR) of the Gregorio Marañon Hospital and its Biomedical Research Foundation; and collaboration with the Marie Paz Jiménez Casado Foundation, which has enabled sarcoma awareness and education activities targeting both patients and healthcare professionals.
