Fairbanks, Alaska. Douglas C-54 Skymaster plane carrying two people crashed into river on Tuesday stretchAbout fairbanksand burst into flames, according to officials. No survivors have been found.
The plane took off from Fairbanks International Airport in the morning. According to Alaska State Troopers, it crashed about 7 miles (11 kilometers) away and “slid down a steep hill into the riverbank where it caught fire.”
The C-54 is a military version of the World War II aircraft Douglas DC-4. According to the website www.airlines.net, DC-4s had 44 passenger seats in their heyday, but most have been converted to cargo planes.
The Federal Aviation Administration described the plane as a Douglas C-54. Police identified it as a DC-4.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched investigators to the crash site, according to Clint Johnson, head of the NTSB’s Alaska regional office.
Johnson said it was unclear what happened between takeoff and the crash, but the tower operator “saw a large plume of smoke.”
