Porsche celebrates the birth of the 911 GT3 with an impressive update of the iconic sports car

Porsche has managed to turn the simple acronym GT3 into a myth, into a true benchmark among the fastest street cars of the last quarter of a century, into the essence of the German brand. It’s not easy. And 25 years later, four generations of this supercar have become a fundamental part of the 911’s success.

Indeed, the presentation of the first Porsche 911 GT3 took place at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1999 and marked the beginning of a new era for the sports car manufacturer. A quarter of a century later, Porsche looks back on the success story of a racing legend of performance and precision.

The 1999 911 GT3 (996 generation) had a 3.6 boxer engine with 360 hp.

“Both the racing and road versions carry Porsche DNA and reflect the company’s racing expertise. A small part of every victory on race tracks around the world is contained in every GT3,” says Andreas Preuninger, Director of GT Models.

Anniversary

And to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Porsche is launching two versions simultaneously for the first time: a racing sports car with a rear spoiler and a more subdued version with the Touring package. Thanks to additional bespoke packages and innovative options, GT3 variants can be further customized to suit the customer’s taste and intended use.

Porsche offers a lightweight sports seat with a folding backrest and a carbon frame as an option.

Porsche has made a special effort to reduce weight: aluminum wheels save 1.5 kilograms, as well as the possibility of equipping with other light-weight-oriented options. As a result, at best the car weighs only 1,420 kilograms.

The engine, traditionally, is a six-cylinder boxer 4.0 with some modifications. It has a power of 510 hp. (same as before) and 450 Nm of torque and can be combined with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

A 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission is available free of charge on both the GT3 and GT3 Touring.

With the PDK transmission it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 311 km/h, with a manual transmission it takes 3.9 seconds and its top speed is 313 km/h.

Additional packages

Porsche offers its customers three packages to make the car more personal and exclusive.

Club sports

The kit includes a roll cage, a six-point seat belt for the driver and a fire extinguisher for use on the track.

Weissach

This is also a package designed for use of the car on the track. Includes carbon fiber (CFRP) in the anti-roll bar, modified suspension, rear axle skid plate, roof, rear spoiler side plates or outside mirror housing. Both leather and Race-Tex upholstery in the cabin. And, as an option, forged magnesium wheels and a roll cage.
