Two adult men have been charged with negligent homicide in the shooting that ended the Kansas City Chiefs’ celebration after their Super Bowl victory. The Missouri Prosecutor’s Office filed charges this Tuesday against two suspects who remain hospitalized after suffering injuries that resulted in a fatal incident. The prosecutor in the case has also announced that he has filed charges against two teenagers for carrying a gun in a state that has one of the laxest gun laws in the United States. Authorities are not ruling out filing new charges in the coming hours.
Prosecutor Jean Peter Baker said this afternoon that the defendants, Dominic Miller and Lindell Mays, attended a celebration hosted by the NFL champions on Wednesday, February 14. At the end of the program, a few minutes after the team thanked its supporters in front of the Central Railway Station, people started arguing. The quarrel escalated into shouting. Maze was the first to make drawings, although what type of weapon he used is not specified. According to Baker, this provocation resulted in “several people” taking out their guns, including Miller. This is in a state that doesn’t require permits to carry a gun, nor does it conduct background reviews on buyers.
According to the story the prosecutor presented at a news conference, Miller fired the shot. The bullet fired from his gun killed Elizabeth Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old Mexican-born radio host and American football fan. The shooter was injured in the firing. They were among those taken to three hospitals after the shooting. Dozens of people between 8 and 47 years of age were injured in this fight. Nine children were among the injured. Everyone is out of danger.
Two other teenagers have been detained in connection with this case. Authorities said last week that he was captured after resisting arrest. The prosecutor is preparing some charges for carrying firearms against these two men, who have not yet been identified. It is not yet clear whether the teenagers fired from weapons in their hands and whether they injured some fans attending the parade. The prosecutor’s office is evaluating whether they can process them as adults, which could take a few weeks.
Kansas Mayor Quinton Lucas blamed the tragedy on a lack of gun regulation. The Democratic politician assured that the city has prepared for the celebration by mobilizing about 800 agents to provide security for the parade of about one million people in the streets. The shootings remind us that no one is safe in the world’s most armed country, not even in moments of celebration. The city recorded 182 murders last year, a record number. The majority of these were committed with firearms, which has prompted the Justice Department to implement a local campaign to reduce gun violence.
The shooting is unlikely to lead to a consensus between Democrats and Republicans in local Congress. This Monday, the lower house, controlled by the right-wing party, voted to ban the firing of weapons in celebration in the metropolitan area. Anyone who does so may be charged with non-serious crimes. The legislation had bipartisan support and was named in honor of Blair Shanahan, an 11-year-old girl who died after being shot in the neck while partying in her yard on the Fourth of July in 2011. Independence Day of the United States of America.
