Microsoft is preparing to release its Copilot+ computers, computers that will enhance the artificial intelligence in Windows 11. One of the most exciting features is Recall, a photographic memory feature that captures everything you see on the screen. Although this feature is exclusive to new laptops, that hasn’t stopped hackers from implementing it on other computers.
Such is the case with Albacore, a software engineer who discovered way to run Recall on Windows computers on ARM. A Windows enthusiast posted videos and images of a version of Recover running on Windows 11 (ARM64) on his X (Twitter) profile. Microsoft’s new “photographic memory” says Albacore also can work on Intel and AMD.
Judging by the first video, this version of Recall performs well below acceptable levels. While some have argued that the slowness is due to the fact that the test machine does not have an NPU, the author posted a second tweet saying that it was due to him recording a remote desktop session.
According to Albacore, The NPU is required for certain workloads, but is not required to run the Recall kernel.. The hacker added that while it can run on Intel or AMD processors, the application depends on the machine learning models included in the Copilot+ PC.
“The Recall app is already available on the x64 platform, but the ML models that OEMs received last week mostly include ARM64 packages. My guess is that Microsoft will want to keep them behind closed doors for a while to increase sales of Copilot+PC,” he said in another message. publication.
Given privacy concerns, Microsoft announced a few days ago that Recall does not upload pictures from memory to the cloud. The process runs directly on the computer and the user’s data is protected. This was tested by Albacore while working on an alternative version of the application.
“I’ve seen some people worry about Reminder and whether all the processing is done locally. In fact, this is true. I can save snapshots, perform OCR, access the timeline and perform visual and text searches on it, all offline.” “, he mentioned.
The author said that he is working on guide to run Recall on Windows 11 without PC Copilot+. The only requirement at the moment is to have a laptop with an ARM version of the operating system. This feature is included in Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.712, although Microsoft limits access only if the hardware requirements are met (Copilot+PC).
If you’re interested in trying Recall and don’t plan on buying one of the AI computers sold by Microsoft and its partners, you’ll have to wait a few months. The hardware requirements beyond ARM don’t seem to be high as Albacore managed to run it on a Snapdragon 7c+ Gen3 with 3.4GB of RAM.
