Recoletas remembers the importance of eye exams on National Myopia Day

Today, June 10th, is celebrated on National Myopia Day, a common vision condition that causes near objects to appear clear but distant objects to appear blurry. This occurs when the eye grows excessively or because certain structures in the eye increase their refractive power and cause light rays to focus incorrectly on the retina.

Rates in Spain reach alarming levels, with 6 in 10 young university students (aged 17 to 27) suffering from myopia.. Moreover, this figure is higher among women (65.4%) than among men (54.7%). To this we must add that by 2050, it is estimated that almost half of the world’s population will be myopic.

In many cases Myopia is not just a refractive issue, it can ultimately affect our vision. Visual health goes much further.

For this reason, the Recoletas Salud Ophthalmological Institute recommends that the population periodically have their vision checked, especially after 35 years of age. Exams also include examining the condition of the retina, measuring eye strain, or checking the condition of the cornea to make sure our eyes are healthy.

Knowing whether our prescription has changed or not will help us continue to see well, and checking the health of the eyeball will allow us to enjoy our vision more peacefully.

The importance of vision testing in childhood

Young children with nearsightedness often do not complain of blurred vision, so vision testing and screening are important for these children. Myopia usually develops most often during adolescence. Some of the signs and symptoms of nearsightedness include eye fatigue, headaches, squinting to see better, or difficulty seeing objects at a distance. This often leads to a decrease in academic performance in children.

myopia control

Currently, there are methods for controlling myopia in childhood, the goal of which is the minimal possible progression of myopia. There are pharmacological methods through glasses or contact lenses that can slow down the development of the disease. Ophthalmological observation in these cases is important to monitor possible complications.

Risks and consequences

People with nearsightedness have a higher risk of retinal detachment. This is a serious vision problem that can lead to blindness. Therefore, it is important for people with myopia to regularly visit an ophthalmologist for retinal examinations. Sometimes timely treatment can avoid serious complications.

People with nearsightedness also have a higher risk of developing glaucoma, cataracts, or other eye diseases.
