“Reducing CO2 emissions is an undeniable reality for the automotive sector”

“Reducing CO2 emissions is an undeniable reality for the automotive industry. as established by European standards. And the Stellantis group wants to lead this change, and for this it already has 65 electrified models from 11 different brands in a wide range of models,” said Stellantis Iberia CEO Pablo Puey during the day dedicated to electrification in Mobility.

This European target, Puy explained, is at odds with the reality of an ageing car fleet, particularly in Spain, where the average age of cars on our roads is 14.2 years, well above the EU average. According to their data, 59% of Spanish cars have a B plate or no plate at all. The situation is even more serious for commercial vehicles, where this share reaches 68%.

For this reason, in his opinion, it is urgent to take measures to renew the vehicle fleet, and as an example he cited the Portuguese market, where the collection of aid for electric vehicles occurs immediately, and companies purchasing this type of vehicle can deduct VAT at that time.

One of the areas he insisted on was the low number of electric vehicle sales in our market and the poor charging infrastructure. The Spanish electricity market is significantly below the European average, which is 22.3% of registrations. As for charging points, we have only 610 per million inhabitants. Faced with this problem, the Stellantis group has set itself the goal of 2030. This will cut CO2 emissions in half and all car sales will be electrified. Investments of 50 billion euros are planned for this purpose.

Stellantis, with three large factories in Spain and as many battery assembly plants, is a fundamental player in the automotive industry and the only manufacturer that produces fully electric vehicles in all its plants, thanks to the use of four different platforms depending on the models to be produced. This allows the company to have a wide range of up to 65 electrified models from 11 different brands with a price range of between eight thousand and two hundred thousand euros, including the sports brand Maserati, which Puy defined as “electrified luxury”. In addition, the company has two commercial vehicles, the Citroën Jumpy and the Peugeot Express, equipped with hydrogen fuel cells and a range of more than 400 kilometers.

Puy also announced the imminent arrival on the Spanish market of a new brand of Chinese origin, called Leap Motor, which will initially sell two electric models: the T-03 as a city car and the C-10, a large SUV sedan that will compete in the D segment.
