Origins of the EuroMillions draw
EuroMillions is played in Europe and the participating countries are responsible for its administration. In Spain, the official body responsible for all lotteries is LAE or Loterías y Apuestas del Estado.
On 13 February 2004, the first EuroMillions draw took place, with only France, Spain and the United Kingdom taking part. It was not until 8 October 2004 that Austria, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, Luxembourg and Switzerland joined in. Of the 28 member states of the European Union, only 9 currently participate in EuroMillions.
Since its inception, the honour of winning the €190 million has gone to two winners from the UK in 2012, a single winner from Portugal in 2014 and the most recent from Spain in 2017.
Another important fact is the millions of euros in prizes that go unclaimed each year. The most common reasons are: lost tickets, torn tickets and even unchecked tickets. The last reason may be due to tickets expiring, as in Spain there is a deadline of 90 calendar days from the draw to claim a lottery ticket. One of the largest unclaimed prizes was in 2012 in the UK, when no winner claimed their £63 million prize. In that case, the amount was donated to charity, but in Spain, unclaimed prizes are handed over to the Ministry of Finance.
About the additional game “El Millon”
El Millón was born in 2016 in Spain and was introduced as an additional game in the EuroMillions Friday draw, whereby when a EuroMillions ticket is validated, El Millón is automatically included at no extra cost. Both tickets purchased for Tuesday and Friday are included in this additional game.
The special thing about this game is that the prize is guaranteed as it is drawn among existing combinations, so there will always be one winner in each draw. The winning combination consists of a code of 3 letters and 5 numbers, which must be guessed in the correct order. Since this is a game related to EuroMillions betting, as you place your bets, the same number of codes are generated, so if you take part in 3 bets, you will receive 3 El Millón codes.
How to take part in EuroMillions?
Euromillions ticket Consists of 5 identical blocks or tables.. In turn, each block consists of two grids: one of numbers, consisting of 50 cells (numbers from 1 to 50), and the other of stars, consisting of 12 cells (numbers from 1 to 12).
To play EuroMillions, you need to choose the type of bet you want to take part in: a “single bet”, consisting of choosing 5 numbers plus 2 stars. In this mode, each block represents a bet, so you can take part in a maximum of 5 bets on the same ticket. Another option is a “Multiple Bet”, in which 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 numbers from the first block of the ticket will be marked plus 3, 4 or 5 stars. In this mode, the price varies depending on the number of numbers chosen.
