Independent candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has confirmed this Friday that he is abandoning his candidacy for the United States elections scheduled for November 5. “I no longer believe I have a realistic path to electoral victory,” he said at a press conference in Arizona.
Kennedy Jr. presented this Friday a document in which he officially expresses his support for Republican Donald Trump in the presidential race, which he has reaffirmed to the media.
An environmental lawyer, anti-vaccine activist and the son and nephew of two giants of Democratic politics who were assassinated during the 1960s, Kennedy entered the race as a rival to President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination in April 2023.
As voters at the time were discouraged by both Joe Biden and Donald Trump, interest in Kennedy skyrocketed. Kennedy changed plans and decided to run as an independent, and a November 2023 Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Kennedy winning the support of 20% of Americans in a three-way race with Biden and Trump.
