Coming soon from drop of saliva will be enough to detect breast cancer, it will take a portable test and five seconds.

Scientists from the University of Florida (USA) and National Yang Ming Chiaotung University in Taiwan have created a hand-sized device that can be found in biomarkers of diseases from a small sample.

The study, published in the Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology B and successfully tested on real patients, highlights the time and money savings compared to other tests such as mammography, ultrasound and MRI.

“Our device is a great option because it is portable and reusable. Test time less than five seconds per sample, which makes it very effective,” explains paper author Xiao-Xuan Wang, a chemical engineer pursuing a doctoral degree in Florida. He adds that the device, for which he has already applied for a patent, will be very useful, especially in developing countries where it is not easy to have advanced technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging to detect breast cancer.

Economical price

Another advantage of the test is its low cost, since it uses available components

which can be found in all hospitals around the world, such as glucose test strips, and the software and hardware platform is open source.
