Samsung Neo QLED 8K QN900D, reviews after first contact. Photo.

  • The NQ8 IA Gen 3 image processor features an NPU that is twice as fast as its predecessor.

  • This TV uses artificial intelligence to optimize picture quality, sound quality and energy efficiency.

When Samsung unveiled this TV in early January last year, during the last CES, it highlighted a feature that for this brand is the main distinguishing feature of its 2024 flagship model: it includes, of course, most advanced image processor developed by Samsung engineers so far. This chip is based on a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that is twice as fast as its predecessor Neo QLED QN900C 8K.

Additionally, the number of neural networks it works with has been increased eightfold, increasing from 64 to 512. In theory, this improvement should allow this TV to restore higher levels of detail and allow 8K upscaling with greater precision than ever. . Today we had the opportunity to see it in action with the necessary calm so that we could get a fairly accurate idea of its image quality. And yes, we can expect this to be the most ambitious Neo QLED 8K model we’ve ever tested if we keep our focus on picture quality.

Tips from the brand

The level of detail that the AI reconstructs from this TV is simply amazing.

The conditions under which we made our first contact with this television were not ideal for reaching definitive conclusions. However, we’ve seen this in action with both 8K content and lower resolution signals than the panel’s native resolution, including 1080p. When we test it in-house and with our own content, we’ll tell you our impressions in more detail, but of course the artificial intelligence (AI) solves 8K upscaling on this QN900D much better than on any other Samsung TV.

What’s most amazing is the very high level of detail this TV is capable of reproducing, especially when the starting point is a 4K signal.

The most amazing thing is the very high level of detail it is able to restore, especially when the starting point is a 4K signal. In fact, this is very reminiscent of DLSS technology, which, as many readers already know, is a method image reconstruction using AI what NVIDIA offers us in its video cards. On the other hand, colorimetry seems very similar to what the Neo QLED QN900C 8K offered last year, although we’re pretty sure this QN900D comes out better calibrated from the factory. We’ll check this out when we have a chance to analyze it more deeply.

On the other hand, this TV’s subjective contrast is outstanding. It’s a shame that Samsung doesn’t reveal much detail about the number of mini-LEDs and independent local dimming zones it includes, but during this contact we got the feeling that the backlight control algorithm is more precise than implemented in last year’s flagship TV. When it comes to HDR content, there’s nothing new under the sun: this TV handles HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, but Samsung still hasn’t implemented Dolby Vision into its most ambitious TVs. It’s a pity.

Samsung ruined the design of this TV

Apparently, the body of this TV is identical to the body of the flagship model that Samsung offered us last year, but in fact this is not entirely true. Its side and top bezels are very thin. So much so that the matrix almost touches the aluminum profile, which you can see in the following detailed photo. It is curious that Samsung proposed to make this model even more stylized than its predecessor, thanks to which the engineers of this brand managed to reduce its thickness in the 65-inch version to a tiny 12.9 mm. This is quite a feat considering this is a mini LED TV.

On the other hand, the finish of this TV is on par with what we can expect from a premium model. Aluminum profile protecting the VA type LCD matrix. It’s flawlessly crafted. An interesting note: the small holes made in the profile, which you can see in the following detailed photo, serve to dissipate the residual thermal energy of the panel and backlight matrix, transferring it to the air through convection.

Another feature of this TV that should not be overlooked is that it comes with a Slim One Connect module that is more stylish than recent models. In fact, it is much thinner than, for example, the module of Samsung’s 2023 flagship TV. In addition, it can be attached to the base of the TV so that it is even more discreet than the previous edition of this connection module. And luckily, it gives us four HDMI inputs that implement the full 2.1 standard. Samsung has been pampering gamers for more than five years. And it is appreciated.

Before you make that first contact, it’s worth taking a look at the central core of this TV. It’s similar to last year’s flagship model, but there’s an important difference between both bases: According to Samsung, the base model of this TV was designed to give users the feeling the panel floats in the air. This effect is pretty cool, although its reliability depends on the position from which we watch the TV. As for the finish and the strength of the base, I have nothing to complain about. It seems small, but its size and weight are necessary to ensure proper stability of this desirable Neo QLED 8K QN900D.
