Saoirse Ronan’s partner Jack Lowden recommended her for her latest film role.

Jack, 33, read Amy Liptrot’s book Overtaken and recommended it to Saoirse, 29, during the Covid-19 lockdown, explaining he thought it was the perfect role for her.

Saoirse, who starred in and produced the film, told The Hollywood Reporter: “It was Jack Lowden, who was also a producer, who introduced me to it. He is a very proud Scot and spent some time in Orkney. Every time he travels to a new place, he tries, if possible, to read a book by a writer from that place. So he had already fallen in love with The Outrun, and when we were in lockdown he was going through the books because we loved. all the time in the world – he recommended that I read it.

“He said, ‘This is the next role you should play.’ So of course, the typical actor, I was thrilled, I think almost everyone has had their own relationship with addiction, whether it’s something you’ve gone through yourself or you’ve seen someone you love go through it. has affected us all in one way or another, and I am no exception. This disease has changed my life very much, I did not go through it myself, but I was always on the verge of what could happen to it. I wanted to understand it more because it was causing so much pain that I finally felt like I wanted to dive into the other side of it, trying to understand it better.”

In The Outrun, Saoirse plays Rona, a woman struggling with alcoholism.

Having lost control of her life, she goes to rehab and then moves home to the Orkney Islands in Scotland, where she grew up.

Saoirse revealed that the addiction issues her character goes through were vital to the film.

She said: “That was one of the first things we noticed. This will not only be the story of a young woman who is recovering, but also the story of a person suffering from alcoholism, where there is no torture, grief and spiral. being motivated solely by her relationship with a man or partner. You could even take the dependency element out of it and it would still be a very interesting story about a time in a woman’s life when she’s in her 30s and you.” “You have to analyze your life in a way you’ve never done before. This element of dependency reinforces the path we are already on as women at this point in our lives.”
