Researchers have developed a new compound that can cause cancer cells to self-destruct. This compound consists of two proteins that scientists combined with each other.
One of the proteins, BCL6, typically promotes the development of blood cancer by suppressing genes responsible for apoptosis, the process by which cells initiate their own death. However, when BCL6 bound to another protein, CDK9, it activated apoptosis genes, causing cancer cells to self-destruct. This method could revolutionize cancer treatment by selectively killing cancer cells without damaging healthy ones.
Scientists are testing the new compound in mice with diffuse large cell lymphoma to evaluate its effectiveness in vivo. If the results are positive, it could mean important advances in the field of oncology.
