About 20% of the female population in Spain is in menopause. Despite the changes and symptoms that may appear during this stage, both physically and psychologically, personally, socially and at work, it must be remembered that menopause is not synonymous with illness.
Yesterday Vanguard published an interview with the head of the psychiatric department of the Val d’Hebron hospital, Gemma Parramon, on the relationship between menopause and mental health. One connection can be found in mood changes caused by hormonal fluctuations. Sometimes these are symptoms indistinguishable from depression. The expert explains that a higher percentage of women fall into depressive cycles when they reach the menopause stage.
Scientific and statistical data are quite clear about the need for women to consult a specialist when these symptoms appear. Another good tip from Dr. Parramone is to think of menopause as a time of learning and taking care of yourself.
