Mexico City (EFE).- Preliminary counts by Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) point to a victory by a huge margin for ruling party leader Claudia Sheinbaum, with just over 60% of the vote, which would make her the virtual president of the country, compared to less than 30% from her main rival in the elections, oppositionist Xochitl Gálvez.

National Regeneration candidate Sheinbaum Movement (Morena) received 60% of the vote nationally, according to a sample of more than 4,600 voting records as of 09:20 local time (03:20 GMT on Monday) from the National Electoral Institute (INE), representing about 3% of the total.

Sheinbaum with a considerable lead over Galvez

According to these figures, Xochitl Gálvez, the candidate of the Force and Heart for Mexico coalition, made up of the National Action Parties (PAN), the Institutional Revolutionary Parties (PRI) and the Democratic Revolution (PRD), has only achieved 28% of the vote. suffrage.

While Jorge Álvarez Menez, candidate of the opposition Citizens Movement (MC), won 9.2% of the vote.

Of the 170,182 approved polling stations, the INE reported the establishment of 169,884, a turnout of 99.98%, with the participation of nearly 1.5 million officials.

Mexico celebrated the largest election in its history this Sunday, with more than 98 million people voting to renew more than 20,000 positions, including the presidency, 500 deputies, 128 senators and nine state governments.
