The Italian leaves his record against De Minaur with an 8-0 score.
Jannik Sinner’s wait to perform at home is over. This Sunday he played at home for the first time this season and did so with authority, beating Australian Alex de Mignaur 6-3, 6-4 to start his third appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals on the right foot. .
The year-old finalist was also playing his first match since becoming champion at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai almost a month ago, achieving his seventh title of the season (more than any player on the 2024 ATP Tour). However, the first place in the PIF ATP rankings did not show any rhythm disturbance.
Although the first break of the match came from the Australian at 1-1 in the first set, the 17-time ATP Tour champion responded by winning the next four games. He never relinquished control of a match again against De Minaur, who made his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals.
The Australian had to endure the most difficult debut. And not only because the best of the season is ahead of us. It also ties into the Lexus ATP HeadToHead history between the two, with Sinner leading 7-0 heading into this Sunday’s matchday. Moreover, the Italian lost only one set in this confrontation – in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Sofia in 2020.
The trend continued at the Inalpi Arena. He tipped the second round in his favor to make it 2-2, and from then on he had no major problems to cruise safely to victory in one hour and 25 minutes, which leaves his record for this tournament at 6-2.
“Considering how long it’s been since my last game, I’m very happy,” Sinner said. “I started with some unforced errors. He played very well at the beginning of the match, so I tried to hold on mentally, knowing that hopefully at some point my tennis will come. “It happened pretty early and I started to come back really well.”
Following this result, both will compete again on Tuesday in Turin. Sinner will do so against Taylor Fritz, with whom he has a 2-1 record. While De Minaur will need a win over Daniil Medvedev, against whom he has a 3-6 record, to continue to rely on himself in his bid to reach the semi-finals.
“My serve will definitely have to improve if I want to win the next match. Taylor (Fritz) played very well today. We’ll see, but today I’m very happy with the victory and I hope it will give me confidence for the next one,” Sinner added.
