Slovenian Slavko Vincic will lead the Champions League final

NYON, Switzerland —

Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic has been appointed to whistle the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, UEFA announced on Monday.

Vincic, 44, who also coached the 2022 Europa League final when Eintracht Frankfurt beat Rangers, will take charge of the June 1 match at Wembley Stadium.

This appointment will strengthen the presence of Slovenian referees at major European football events.

This will be the fourth UEFA final led by a Slovenian referee since Damir Skomina was appointed for the 2017 Europa League final. Judges from the Netherlands and Spain have since held the second highest number of appointments in men’s finals.

Also on Monday, UEFA appointed England’s Rebecca Welch to helm the Women’s Champions League final, Romanian Istvan Kovac to helm the Europa League final and Portugal’s Arthur Soares Dias to helm the Europa Conference League final.

Vincic has whistled in five Champions League matches this season without being awarded a penalty or receiving a red card. One of the games was Borussia’s 4:2 victory over Atlético Madrid in the second leg of the quarter-finals.

He was also in charge of two World Cup matches in Qatar, including a 2-1 win over eventual champions Argentina on their debut against Saudi Arabia.

The three men selected on Monday are also on the shortlist for the European Championships, which starts on June 14 in Germany.

Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta will play in the Europa League final on May 22 in Dublin.

The Women’s Champions League title clash between Barcelona (the current monarchy) and Lyon will take place on May 25 in Bilbao, Spain.

The match between Fiorentina and Olympiacos for the Europa League title will take place on May 29 in Athens.
