Sony reported that the PlayStation 5 sold a total of 65.5 million units. The data comes to us along with a presentation of its latest financial results, which adds that the Japanese company sold 3.8 million consoles new generation in the second fiscal quarter (Q2) ended September 30.
During the same period last year, Sony sold 4.9 million PlayStations. This means sales registered a 22.5% year-on-year decline, marking another quarter with clear signs of slowing. And all this comes as the company continues to bet on its physical consoles.
A few months ago we noted that Sony’s next generation consoles they sold less
and that the possibility of achieving the PlayStation 4 unit sales record of 117 million units, barring a miracle, would be impossible. Despite this, the firm has just released the new PlayStation 5 Pro for 800 euros.
When we talk about PS5 sold, we mean all versions of the console. So far, this is the original PS5, as well as its “thin” version. It’s too early to tell how the launch of the PS5 Pro will impact overall PlayStation sales. It should be noted that this generation is barely halfway through its life cycle.
As for Microsoft, Sony’s main competitor in this market, we have not had official data on sales of its consoles for a long time. However, The Wall Street Journal (based on data from Aldora Intelligence) suggested that the Xbox Series 28.3 million units until June last year.
If we go back to the data released by Sony, we find that cumulative PlayStation 5 sales for the quarter ending June 30, 2024 (Q1) were 61.7 million units. We’re talking about a Sony console that will double the sales of the Microsoft console that we already saw in the previous generation.
PlayStation 4, as we noted above, sold 117 million units. Xbox One, in turn, reached 57.9 million units. A few years ago, things were very different when the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 came out. They were almost tied at the sales level – 87.4 million and 84.9 million, respectively.
It should be noted that these giants of the video game world used different strategies. Sony continues to bet on hardware, while Microsoft isn’t abandoning hardware but envisions a more robust future where players can enjoy a catalog of games on any device through Game Pass.
