Yesterday in Madrid, the “SPCial Generation Study” was presented, prepared by the SPC in collaboration with Jorge Flores, founder of Screens Amigas, which collected the opinions of 1,000 young Spaniards aged 18 to 35 on the use of devices connected to the Internet and their perception of the need for digital disconnection. Among the main findings is that more than half of those surveyed are considering a “digital detox” to restore healthier habits regarding technology. It has long been established that excessive use of devices connected to the Internet, social networks and other digital platforms generates stress, digital addiction and other negative health consequences. In addition, there is a decline in normal interpersonal relationships among young people due to the excessive use of digital communications. In this regard, the tendency towards digital disconnection is increasing, and this study provides some interesting data.
Among them, more than half of young people have considered deleting their social media profiles, and 12.7% have done so permanently in order to lead a healthier lifestyle. Currently, the average daily use of smartphones is around 5 hours a day, which is increasingly perceived as excessive, and the study shows that 75.5% of young Spaniards have decided to reduce their use of mobile phones, although only 14.3% say they have maintained this permanently.
Social networks occupy a large part of the time, as they have become a common way of communicating with others, but their constant use makes Spaniards think about doing a “digital detox”. This is indicated by 56.5% of respondents, while 12.6% claim that the reason is the need to establish personal relationships in the real world, outside of digital environments. The preferred way of doing this digital detox for respondents is to delete social networks (38%) and then control the time of use through options that integrate smartphones (37%), but in reality only 27.9% think about it. data.
In the presentation, Irene Manterola, SPC’s Chief Marketing Officer, said that “as a technology company, we feel a responsibility to promote safe, healthy and responsible use of technology. “We are excited to collaborate with Jorge Flores of Screens Amigas to make visible the challenges of a more balanced digital connection.” And he commented that this research allowed them to “dive deeper into a movement that has not been analyzed in detail until now, showing how more and more people are joining the digital detox trend.” They have identified this group of young people who are seeking this disconnection despite living in a hyper-connected world as Generation Z.
Mobile Phones for Digital Disconnection
Another finding of this study is the greater interest that many people have in the so-called “fog phones”, terminals that are used almost exclusively for calling and sending messages, with some additional features, but without the Internet connection that is the basis of the devices. smartphones. Their data shows that 12.2% of the population has already chosen this type of terminal, and 19.5% know someone who has made this change. As Jorge Flores of Screens Amigas explains, “fog phones are an interesting option because they allow people to choose when they want to be connected”, offering “a new and very valuable experience, while for adults it is an opportunity to renew this disconnection and be a positive example for children”. In addition, he adds that this type of phone “is positioned as an ideal tool to learn to choose moments of disconnection, to be truly disconnected and allow the younger generation to discover the experience of living with fewer obligations and digital distractions, taking “more control” of your time and your life”.
In line with this trend, SPC has announced a new line of phones based on this concept, SPC Wild, which will complement its current offering in this category of phones, where they are currently the market leader. These are basic and affordable terminals with a classic flip design and 4G connectivity, with which you can call, send text messages, listen to the radio, take photos with a simple camera and play the classic game of Snake. They will be available on the market throughout the summer at a price that has not yet been specified, but according to SPC it will be under 100 euros.
Irene Manterola explained that “for over three decades, we have been constantly working to keep up with the changing needs of consumers by creating innovative and accessible solutions for everyone. SPC WILD will join our extensive catalog of technologies as a real option for those people who want to survive the previous disconnection from social media, as well as for those children who are starting to have more independence and therefore begin to relate to technology.”
