It was the first hours of 2023. Outside the State Center for Social Reintegration (Cereso) number three in City Juarez Chihuahua, a group of people lined up to enter the prison and visit their relatives deprived of liberty. But they did not know that after a few moments, an armed command would break into the facilities to start a riot in which More than 20 inmates would escape.

Minutes before the riots, elements of the Municipal Police were attacked with firearms while they were driving along Manuel Gómez Morín avenue. The foregoing generated a persecution that culminated in the arrest of four men and the seizure of a Ford Expedition truck.

Subsequently, a second armed attack was reported on Panamericana avenue, where preventive agents repelled the attack and managed to kill two crew members of a Hummer type vehicle. It was the beginning of a day full of chaos.

At first it was reported that a group of more than 20 armed subjects -on board armored vehicles- opened fire on the security elements that they were in the main booth of the prison, where two custodians would have died. The attack was perpetrated in front of the relatives of the inmates who were in the Cereso on the occasion of the New Year’s visit. It was close to 7:00 in the morning.

Thus, while an intense shooting was taking place outside the prison and the attackers arrived at the second booth in the Customs area, riots began inside, as the prisoners took advantage of the riot to attack some guards and set fire to mattresses and furniture. . The main objective: release a crime leader He faced more than 200 years in prison.

Despite the fact that agents of the National Guard, the Mexican Army and the State Public Security Secretariat deployed a strong operation in front of the Ciudad Juárez prison to control the situation, the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the death of 17 peopleof which 10 were security officers and seven prisoners.

During these events, another 13 people were injured (three officers and 10 inmates). At the time it was reported that around 24 prisoners managed to escape, “Those who used what happened to carry out actions against antagonistic groups,” said the State Prosecutor’s Office. However, the authorities updated the figure to 27 escapees (but two of them died).

Among the prisoners who escaped was Ernest “N” alias the net Y Caesar “N””, aka Chilin. It is presumed that both would be the reason for which the riot broke out, in addition to the fact that they have been identified as alleged members of the criminal group called “The Mexicles”, which operates for the Caborca Cartel.

It was reported that after the riot on January 1, the authorities found in the cell of the netor firearms and a plasma screen, according to local reports. It is estimated that the riots and the escape lasted about 10 minutes.

For their escape, the armed subjects they moved to area 5 of the prisonmodule 18, where they would wait for the net Already the chilin to escape, for which reason it is presumed that the custodians were subdued and tied up, according to reports from The newspaper.

The former governor of Chihuahua, Javier Corral, pointed out that the net -who was facing a sentence of more than 200 years for kidnapping and homicide after his arrest in 2009- was “one of the generators of greater violence in the city from the prison”, for which he showed dismay after his escape, in addition to describing him as “the toughest and heartless drug trafficker” of Los Mexicles.

In 2010, the net he had already tried to escape of the Cereso No. 3 of Ciudad Juárez, but because he was injured during the riot, his escape could not take place. Likewise, it is presumed that he would also be related to the riots and violent acts that occurred within the same prison in August 2022.

After the intervention of the authorities of the three levels of government in response to this leak, the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office released the identities of the persons deprived of liberty who had to receive medical attention due to the injuries received.
