The AEVI Yearbook 2023 offers a detailed overview of the state of the video game industry in Spain, highlighting its economic growth and strategic role both nationally and internationally. The video game industry not only promotes the Spanish language and culture, but also embodies values such as solidarity, cooperation and gender equality. In 2023, the turnover of the sector in Spain increased by 16.3%, reaching 2,339 million euros, with the number of players exceeding 20 million.
The video games sector has received strong institutional support, especially during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, which has contributed to the organization of innovative events and the publication of conclusions to strengthen the cultural and creative dimension of the sector in Europe. In addition, the Ministry of Culture has introduced cooperation and financing mechanisms, such as cultural bonuses and subsidies for the business community, to support the development of the industry.
Technological transformation, including artificial intelligence, has become a central theme in 2023. The video game industry has pioneered the use of artificial intelligence in relation to non-player characters (NPCs) and game dynamics. This technological advancement creates challenges and opportunities that require constant updating of capabilities and favorable fiscal policies to encourage innovation.
The profile of Spanish players is varied. The average age is 33, and although the majority are men, female participation has increased, making up 49% of players in 2023. The age distribution shows that video games are popular among all age groups, with significant use occurring on devices such as consoles, smartphones and PCs.
Video game companies in Spain have experienced remarkable growth. For example:
The esports sector continues to grow with notable events such as the League of Legends Super League and VALORANT’s Rising MediaMarkt Intel. The League of Professional Video Games (LVP) has strengthened its business model in Latin America by organizing regional events and leagues and promoting entertainment in Spanish.
Accessibility and inclusivity are industry priorities. Initiatives such as the Developer Accessibility White Paper in collaboration with the ONCE Foundation and education projects with Minecraft Education highlight the sector’s commitment to diversity and equality. In addition, in collaboration with institutions and training centers, the use of video games as a learning tool is encouraged.
The sector faces challenges such as protecting intellectual property, combating piracy and the need for favorable tax policies. However, technological innovation and institutional support offer significant opportunities for the growth and consolidation of Spain as a global center for video game development.
The AEVI Yearbook 2023 thus reflects the dynamism and evolution of the video game industry in Spain, highlighting its economic, cultural and social impact, and highlighting the opportunities and challenges it faces in an ever-changing global environment.
