Javier Tebasthe president of La Liga, ruled out this Wednesday that the recent signing of the Frenchman Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid would significantly increase the value of the audiovisual rights of the tournament that he heads.
“For us, his arrival is a great joy, because he is one of the best players, but the rights do not increase just because you have excellent players, they help you, but this is not essential,” he explained in his speech on the first day of the events at the FIFA World Cup in America.
Tebas was scheduled to attend the summit in person, but last-minute commitments in Spain prevented him from making the trip, and he instead delivered the speech virtually.
“What drives up the price of audiovisual rights is the work that goes into the branding of the league and its clubs, the players are immediate. When Cristiano Ronaldo went to Juventus, the Serie A rights didn’t increase and the French league didn’t charge more when Messi went to PSG, he added.
In addition to talking about Mbappe, Tebas criticized Google and Apple for not blocking applications for their mobile devices that can illegally view live broadcasts of La Liga matches.
“There is no common strategy among all leagues to combat piracy. We must travel country after country to promote legislation. We need a law that forces Google and Apple to remove apps from their smartphones and stores. Otherwise, it will result in us charging less for audiovisual rights.”
Along with Tebas’ participation, this Wednesday at the start of the Summit in Mexico City, various participants reflected on the growth of the women’s football industry, as well as how organizations can use social media in football.
There was a table in front of Tebas where they were talking about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Mexico, the USA and Canada.
“We intend to repeat the celebrations (of the World Cup) in ’86; we have unrivaled organizational capabilities, very interesting things await us,” said Estadio Azteca CEO Félix Aguirre this Wednesday at a conference at the start of the World Cup. World Football Summit.
