For several days in July and August, specialized personnel conduct information, education and prevention work at municipal swimming pools in the city, aimed at the general population, with a particular focus on smokers and the population most vulnerable to the effects of tobacco use and sun exposure, such as young children.
According to the councillor responsible for Teruel Saludable, Lucia Gargallo, the aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the direct health risks of smoking, as well as the effects of smoke. Gargallo warns of the increase in the use of vapes, especially disposable ones, which are very fashionable among the young population due to their modern format and sweet taste, “and which also require special attention in our campaign.”
In line with our campaign motto, we also raise awareness of the dangers of insufficient sun exposure. The adviser reminds us that sun exposure is beneficial for some dermatological conditions and is necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D, but improper exposure can lead to burns, premature skin aging, blemishes and increases the risk of moderate to severe skin cancer in the long term.
In addition, information is also provided on places designated as Smoking-free premises in the city, responding to one of the objectives of the Spanish Network of Healthy Cities, to which the Teruel City Council belongs. In addition, people interested in quitting smoking are offered information about free groups to achieve this goal, organized by the Spanish Association against Cancer, and various materials prepared for the campaign are distributed.
The campaign time is from 11:30 to 13:30. This Tuesday, July 30, it will be held at the San Leon pool. The next scheduled dates are: July 31 at the Fuenteserrada pool; August 1 at San Fernando; August 27 at San Leon; August 28 again at Fuenteserrada; and August 29 at San Fernando.
