Texas to set up National Guard base near Mexico border

Madrid, February 17 (Europa Press) –

Texas State Governor Greg Abbott announced during a press conference this Friday that he is creating a forward operating base to house National Guard troops near the border with Mexico who are responding to the border crisis.

According to a statement from the Texas Governor’s Office, Abbott said, “Texas is expanding our border security capabilities by building a new Texas Military Department base camp to enhance and improve border security operations in the region.”

Abbott said that “This will increase the ability of the greater number of Texas Military Department soldiers to operate more effectively and efficiently at Eagle Pass.” “Until now, the Texas National Guard has been spread far and wide across this region, far from their fellow soldiers and sometimes traveling long distances to do their job. This base camp provides a dramatic set of conditions for our soldiers. Will definitely improve.”

“Texas could not respond to President Biden’s border crisis without the brave men and women of the Texas National Guard, and building this base camp for them is essential,” the governor explained.

At the press conference, Abbott was accompanied by Maj. Gen. Thomas Suelzer, the Adjutant General of Texas, and Texas Border Czar, Mike Banks. Suelzer described that the operations base would be able to hold 1,800 soldiers with individual rooms and would have the ability to add 500 additional soldiers “if we need to deploy the Texas Tactical Border Force to the area.”

“In the coming weeks, we will also expand operations north and south of Eagle Pass, installing additional obstacles to strengthen our range. We will also add three more fan boats and expand the radar truck capabilities of our drone program. Under the leadership of Governor Abbott, we are deploying all available resources and strategies to protect and defend Texas,” Suelzer said.

For his part, Banks has expressed that “the most important thing he wants them to take away from this” is that they are providing a “better quality of life” for their Texas National Guard soldiers and that The work has been praised, as are those who are managing to reduce the number of migrants.

The base camp will also have a 700-person dining hall, a recreation centre, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi access, single rooms for soldiers starting at 36 square metres, chaplaincy programs and medical and psychological health facilities.
