CES is definitely a laptop show. In previous years we had whole rows gaming laptops or laptop makers who took design risks. In that CES 2024Many of our favorite laptops have been redesigned, either tweaking the formula slightly or taking a radical new direction.
So, ignore all the fuss about artificial intelligence and take a look at these beautiful and innovative new laptops – the best that CES 2024 has to offer.
The Specter x360 has long been one of our favorite laptops. This is a premium 2-in-1 convertible that has significant improvements this year. There are new 14- and 16-inch models coming this year, but this is the first time we’ve seen the Specter x360 14, and it’s fantastic. There’s nothing revolutionary here, just small changes to the design to modernize it and make it stand out, like softened edges, slightly larger keys, and a trackpad with haptic feedback.
What’s more, the 120Hz OLED display is excellent, the speakers are much improved, and the battery life is solid. Unfortunately, there’s no discrete GPU option like on other 14-inch laptops like the Dell XPS 14. Still, it’s a very impressive launch for a laptop that’s still popular.
It wouldn’t be CES without something a little more experimental. The ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid takes the 2-in-1 concept to the next level by offering two separate computers in one device: one running Android and the other running Windows. Sure, at first glance it looks like any other 14-inch Windows laptop, but tear off the screen and you’ve got a full-fledged Android tablet with its own memory, storage, battery and camera. Despite its 14-inch size, the tablet feels light enough to be held and used comfortably with one hand.
You can even use the hybrid drive to access photos you take on the tablet, switch to Android in laptop mode, run your entire Android system in one window, or even connect part of your laptop to an external monitor using the tablet separately. The reason this is happening, of course, is that Windows 11 still doesn’t take tablets seriously, and using them only with touch controls is a pain. The ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid is a great solution for this purpose.
This is not a list of gaming laptops, but I can’t help but mention ROG Zephyrus G14 updated design. The silver color is subtle enough to make this a fantastic crossover device, not unlike the Razer Blade 14. This year’s improvements are undeniable and make one of our favorite laptops even better. The body has been slimmed down and redesigned, the display is now an OLED panel, and the touchpad has been enlarged to fit a full-height palm rest.
In a year where the Razer Blade 14 hasn’t received as many updates, the Zephyrus G14 is looking more and more like a real contender, combining performance and portability in a way we haven’t seen before.
Many people are unhappy with the updated Dell XPS laptops. Controversial changes from the previous XPS 13 Plus have been implemented across the lineup, including a seamless haptic touchpad and touch-sensitive buttons on the lid that replace a row of function keys. People are also unhappy about the lack of a full-size SD card slot.
I think all of these complaints are more understandable on the XPS 16, especially the port issue. but in the case of the lower-end XPS 14, I don’t think this design choice will be as abrasive. I love the look of this laptop, and the ability to configure it with discrete RTX graphics could make it quite a powerful laptop and even a worthy competitor. 14-inch MacBook Pro.
He Zenbook Duo This is not the first laptop with dual screens, but the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i. However, the Zenbook Duo has several advantages over this device. Instead of using a separate origami stand, the built-in stand can stack both displays on top of each other. The stand can also support two screens side by side.
Another important change is that the Zenbook Duo has a physical touchpad in addition to the keyboard. This makes the Zenbook Duo more convenient to use as a laptop, allowing you to close the bottom screen completely in clamshell mode or even use the keyboard and trackpad wirelessly, separate from the device. Yes, it’s cool, but it’s also a much more practical evolution of this type of device, even if it still seems like a forward-thinking experiment.
