A year has passed since Richard Scolier’s life became increasingly confusing. The 57-year-old Australian doctor was in Poland when he suddenly suffered a seizure. Diagnosis: glioblastoma, the deadliest type of brain cancer. Almost twelve months later, Skolyer managed to stop the progression of the tumor. What’s happened?
Having learned about the disease, the doctor carried out experimental treatment based on our own research about melanoma. Scolyer received immunotherapy designed to treat melanoma before undergoing surgery to remove the tumor. In addition, the doctor received a unique personalized vaccine, which increased the effectiveness of treatment.
A year later, the doctor celebrates the achievement on his social media. “Last Thursday I had a brain scan to check for recurring complications of glioblastoma (and/or treatment). Yesterday I found out that there are still no signs of relapse. It’s impossible to be happier!!!!!“, he explained on his Twitter profile. “Thank you to the amazing team who took such good care of me, especially my wife Katie and my wonderful family!”
“By taking an experimental treatment at the risk of shortening your life, you have advanced the understanding of brain cancer and benefit future patients,” explains the University of Sydney. However, it is too early to talk about a complete cure. In addition, the man experienced several side effects during treatment, such as liver problems or epileptic seizures.
According to the Mayo Clinic, glioblastoma is a type of cancer that begins with the development of cells in the brain or spinal cord in which cells multiply rapidly, penetrating healthy tissues. It develops at any age, but is more common in adult men.
Symptoms of glioblastoma include increased headaches, nausea and vomiting, blurred or double vision, and seizures. “There is no cure for glioblastoma (…) treatments can reduce the rate at which cancer progresses and reduce symptoms,” the aforementioned website states.
Treatment to slow the progression of glioblastoma is usually surgery to remove it. radiation therapy, chemotherapy, field therapy for tumor treatment, targeted therapy and clinical trials. Skoljer obeyed the last of them.
