The long-awaited Shattered Space expansion to Bethesda’s sci-fi role-playing video game Starfield has received a largely negative reaction on Steam, with player numbers plummeting. According to the latest data, the game’s concurrent user limit has dropped by more than 95% since its launch in 2023.
Released on September 30th for $29.99, which is in addition to the base game’s $69.99, the expansion failed to attract players, many of whom expressed their disappointment in reviews. Even some comments labeled “positive” point out flaws in the storytelling and gameplay. Players describe the story as “boring”, recommending the game only to those who “need some sleep before a long day”.

Other players have noted that the expansion is simply “more of the same,” calling it mediocre and suggesting that you wait until it goes on sale to buy it. There is also a repeated lack of innovation, not even a significant improvement over the base game. “Really terrible. This game needed Far Harbor, but instead we got something more like Mothership Zeta. The only positive is that visually it’s stunning, but everything else is terrible. There is almost no loot or new equipment, the characters and plot are banal/predictable, the script is a bit amateurish,” says one player.
Something similar to what another Steam user commented, who in his review said that for him, Bethesda Game Studios’ DLC “used to be a surefire way to get me back into the game,” but Starfield was a “big disappointment.” “The over-reliance on procedural generation has made a space exploration game completely boring and not very interesting to explore. “The role-playing aspects that were the main focus before launch were as shallow as ever, and the core story was unfortunately very boring,” he says.
These terrible reviews and negative ratings are in contrast to the comments that various media outlets have given him. According to GameCentral, 4/5 – Digitec, 4/5 – Windows Central, 3/5 – Eurogamer, 3/5 – GamesRadar and 2/5 – Guardian.
Public dissatisfaction is also reflected in the numbers. According to SteamDB, the maximum peak of concurrent Starfield players was recorded on September 4, 2023 – 330,723 users. However, in the last 24 hours, this figure has fallen to 15,862, representing a decline of 95.2%.
What’s more, Shattered Space doesn’t appear to have increased its player count: on launch day, September 30, it only peaked at 21,792, up just 37% from August’s peak of 15,908.
A panorama that reflects the challenge for Bethesda, a studio that will have to adjust its strategy to ensure that the decline in interest in Starfield does not become an even greater problem in light of future releases such as The Elder Scrolls VI.
In the world of video games, interesting stories often happen, like what recently happened to a Fallout fan named Zach Finfrock. A gamer who unexpectedly discovered his own illustration in the official Fallout 76 in-game store, added without his consent. And after several clarifications about the “mistake,” Bethesda eventually offered him a job at a popular development company.
Finfrock, known in the Fallout community as a director and meme creator, accidentally discovered that his drawing of Vault Boy was being used to promote a set in the Atomic Shop, without his permission. Instead of suing, he decided to contact Bethesda directly through a message to Jonathan Rush, creative director of Fallout 76. This is how he explained the situation and even offered to create an improved version of the image.
