The Future of RCS Messaging: Growth, Benefits and Opportunities for Businesses and Operators

A recent report by global communications platform Infobip showed that Rich Communication Services (RCS) traffic will quadruple in the next five years.

This significant growth reflects the growing popularity of this messaging protocol. Consulting firm Omdia, which is responsible for the study, estimates that by 2029, the number of RCS messages from both application-to-person (A2P) and person-to-person (P2P) will increase from from 1.5 billion currently to more than 6 billion.

On the other side, RCS is an evolution of traditional SMS.allowing users and businesses to send rich messages over data or Wi-Fi connections using a standard SMS inbox. RCS messaging in the A2P sector is expected to generate approximately $4.2 billion in revenue by 2029, according to Omdia.

Likewise, Apple’s recent introduction of RCS in the iOS 18 update has been a key driver of this growth. Omdia expects RCS to reach an active audience of approximately 2.5 billion monthly users across multiple platforms by the end of 2024.

Research also emphasizes that America, Asia and Oceania will be the main regions that will attract both messaging traffic and revenue. RCS A2P in the coming years.

According to Charlotte Palfrey, Senior Analyst, Advanced Messaging and Communications, Omdiaexplained that “RCS offers important benefits to both companies and mobile operators. Companies should use generative AI to improve the RCS experience with more personalized, engaging, and effective campaigns to improve conversion rates. For their part, operators should work with the messaging ecosystem to increase awareness of RCS among brands and consumers, and even use RCS internally for marketing and customer service functions to demonstrate its full functionality.”

For my part, Ivan Ostojic, CBO Infobip said that “RCS has important advantages and thanks to Apple’s update, it is now available in all parts of the world. There is no longer any need to download an app to send and receive photos or videos. In addition, brands can accompany the customer throughout the entire purchasing journey: from initial offer, acquisition and support. “We also talk about a significant opportunity for operators to get the most out of RCS by delivering rich conversational messaging to their customers.”

Considering this scenario, Infobip offers companies and telecoms the opportunity benefit from RCS Business Messaging through your service Messaging as a Platform (MaaP). The solution provides control over performance and content, as well as managed service options, making it easier to connect to other mobile operators and improve the user experience.
